A Level Music student, Joe Devonshire, has had a busy few months. He was one of the pioneers entering the ABRSM’s new online Grade 5 Music Theory examination at the end of August and has heard that, after a very intense period of study over the summer holidays through virtual sessions with teacher Jenny Baker, he has achieved a Distinction in this, his first ever Theory examination.

Joe is just as busy now he has returned to school; in addition to taking Grade 7 Rockschool on guitar this month, he is working with the school’s visiting guitar teacher, Mark Chapman, to prepare a 20-minute recorded performance of Jazz Standards and his own compositions for submission to the Royal Academy of Music and Trinity-Laban Conservatoire of Music by mid-October, as part of their audition process. Joe is applying to both conservatoires and universities to study for a Music degree, with a specialism in Jazz Performance. He enjoys the academic aspects of the Music A Level course, in particular the study of harmony, whether in the Chorale settings of J S Bach, the modal evocations of place and mood in Debussy’s piano pieces, or the progressive compositions of the great jazz musician, Courtney Pine. His first love, however, is performing. He has played in the school’s Rock Band and in the small ensembles that accompany the soloists in the House Shout, as well as singing in the Choir and the Chamber Choir. He is often to be found improvising on the guitar in the Hess Studio. Joe hopes eventually to find a career in which performance plays a significant role.

Fiona Adcroft and her horse Oscar, AKA My Oakwood Lewis, were busy throughout lockdown.

With little chance to socialize or other activities,  all attention was on Oscar, who has proven not only to be a nice dressage horse but a lovely character.  They competed in the on-line competition of E-Riders, being filmed riding a standard competition test at home whilst bring judged by a British Dressage judge. Their score increased to a very respectable 71.07% and at the moment they are leading in the Open Novice Leagues with over 70% scores.

The NSEA dressage qualifier was a similar online format and they scored 74.7% in novice, however, sadly they did not qualify for the finals as the top combinations had scores up to 80%,  there is no shame to be defeated by combinations that have competed at European Championships in recent years.

Fiona and Oscar have won all their junior Novice Classes locally and also managed to win the overall Novice class, where juniors and senior scores are put together. They are also due to compete in the last competition of the Halesworth and District Riding Club summer league in Spexhall and on 10th October will be representing HDRC for the Junior Championship qualifiers.

Alice Greenacre, who left Year 13 in June to head to university, sent us an editorial during her time in lockdown.

During Lockdown I made friends online with a group of people who shared my love and passion for the world of theatre. After a few months,  three other girlsand  myself decided it would be fun to start up a theatre based podcast together with no experience.

After a few weeks of planning we became the Unlocking Theatre Podcast and all took on individual roles as well as presenting, mine being marketing and creating artwork for the socials. Initially we had no idea whether it would take off or where it would end up but less than 3 months later we are streaming on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and others, we have completed our first series and are now working on series two, we have interviewed over 30 West End stars from shows such as Hamilton, Heathers, Six, Wicked, Mamma Mia and many more and we have lots of exciting plans for the future.

If you are interested you can find us on various social media platforms our Instagram is @unlockingtheatre and on Twitter we are @unlock_theatre

Saint Felix students celebrated their brilliant results after a long summer of uncertainty.

  • 99.7% of students achieved at least 5 passes at grade 4 or above including English and Mathematics
  • 39 students were graded across a total of 346 exams

Mr Harrison says “We congratulate all of this year’s GCSE students for their hard work and commitment over the past two years. 100% of our pupils achieved at least 5 passes at grade 4 or above, and we are looking forward to welcoming many of them back to our Sixth Form in September in order to continue their studies at A Level. As one of very few schools in Suffolk that offer Latin as a mainstream subject we’re especially pleased that in line with previous years’ achievements, this year over two thirds of pupils were awarded grade 8 or 9”

Notable successes include:

  • Elodie Whyte from Beccles (2 x grade 9, 8 x grade 8) who joined the school in year 5
  • Brooke Oram from Wrentham (2 x grade 9, 3 x grade 8, 4 x grade 7) who has been a pupil at Saint Felix since joining the school in year 6
  • Josh Stephens from Beccles (1 x grade 9, 7 x grade 8, 1 x grade 7, 1 x grade 6)who has been a student at Saint Felix since nursery

All three pupils will be continuing their studies at the school with A Levels in the Sixth Form.

Francis Vaughan submitted a composition entry for the BBC Young Composer 30 Second Composition Challenge and this has been selected as one of their favourites to be showcased on the website (only 9 pieces have been selected so far).

His composition has been performed by an Oboist from the BBC Concert Orchestra. You can watch the piece being performed here.

Francis says:

In May, I had to create a piece of music for school, based on a note set from ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’. Because of this, I decided to make the piece about rainbows and the rain that comes before them. To accompany it, I wrote a haiku:

Raindrops and Rainbow,
Spring’s gentle showers of colour,
May, awake new life

I play several instruments but I wrote this for the oboe because it best evokes the tranquillity of gentle rain in Spring.

Kitty-May Hayes has been very busy during lockdown.

Kitty-May was asked to perform a monologue for the INK Festival’s online series, written by an array of writers during lockdown.  She filmed a video of the performance at home and it will soon be posted on INK’s website.  The monologue was also broadcast on BBC Radio Suffolk and Kitty-May was interviewed.

Kitty-May continues to be pro-active and has been taking part in a Norwich-based open mic session on Saturday evenings, her lockdown song also won a prize and a place in the Two Metres Apart exhibition.

She has also been selected by Mike King (London-based vocal coach to many famous names) to perform one of her original songs in an open mic he hosted online.

Helen Cochrane from Noise Solution has continued to provide Kitty-May with online sessions throughout isolation and Kitty-May is recording an EP of her original songs.

One of Suffolk’s leading schools is expanding its term time to allow students to stay on top of their schoolwork and is aiming to exceed past results, thanks to the creation of a unique online learning programme during lockdown.

Saint Felix School in Southwold is staying open a week longer into the Summer holidays and, subject to government guidelines, plans to open two weeks early in August for overseas students to return safely.

The decision has been taken following consultation with students and their families, after 93% of them agreed that they had made progress thanks to the bespoke distant learning the school put into practice from March. Pupils have all received live lessons, delivered across the UK as well as to overseas students in China, Tanzania, Germany and Russia.

This learning programme has been delivered on a bespoke secure platform, which has meant that live lessons have been delivered across the board, from ages 8 to 18. The senior leadership team had specific training throughout the Easter holidays in order to effectively deliver the lessons and teachers have spent weekends delivering kits such as science packs and books to the homes of their pupils. Headmaster James Harrison says: “As soon as it was clear we had to close, our priority was to replicate the learning experience at home. The key was always going to be using the skills of our teaching staff and I have been overwhelmed with their dedication and the results. Most of our students live locally, but we have had lessons involving students from all over the world happening in real time, thanks to our early use of safe and secure technology.”

Pupils have received up to four online lessons per day in Maths, English, Languages, Science, PE, History, Geography, Art, Photography, Music, RE, Classics, Psychology – as well as assemblies, chapel services and pastoral time with their tutors.  The lessons are fully interactive and all pupils can be seen and heard.  Parents have praised the programme for developing their children’s confidence and communication skills as well as enabling them all to keep up with their levels of learning, as one enthusiastic parent  said: “The remote learning from Saint Felix has worked very well as my daughter is able to focus, finish all assignments which are set and has the time to produce quality pieces of work set by her teachers. This in turn has enabled her to become more confident.  It is great that she can see and interact with all her friends too.”*

Concludes James: “The education and wellbeing of our students is always paramount, so the extra time at the end of the Summer term will ensure everyone enters the holidays exactly where they would have been in their learning journey – while our August opening for overseas students means we can open in line with government guidelines in September. We are prepared for any eventuality including a second lockdown should the unthinkable happen.”

Saint Felix School is an independent co-educational day and boarding school for children aged from two – 18, established over 120 years ago and located close to the seaside town of Southwold on the Suffolk coast.

On Thursday 12th March,  Year 9 students visited the Imperial War Museum in London to view exhibits from 20th and 21st century conflicts.

Students were able to experience a simulation of life in the trenches and to see at first hand examples of weaponry used in both world wars. They also learnt about the deprivations and opportunities of life on the Home Front. Between now and the end of the Spring term, they will be developing this knowledge in History, during form periods and in their English classes, in support of their studies. Despite the long day, students enjoyed the trip (their singing on the return trip  gave a whole new meaning to Carpool Karaoke) and behaved very well,  both in the museum and on the tube.

Isabelle Last was selected to represent Norfolk in the Inter-counties XC competition in Loughborough on Saturday 7th March.

It was a UK wide competition with the best 8 athletes from 40 counties, including Scotland and Wales. This was the biggest and most important race so far in her running career.  Isabelle was one of around 300 girls in the U13 race at the tough and muddy course at Prestwold Hall. She is the youngest in her age group and finished 135th in the UK and 3rd girl home for Norfolk.
