On Thursday 12th March,  Year 9 students visited the Imperial War Museum in London to view exhibits from 20th and 21st century conflicts.

Students were able to experience a simulation of life in the trenches and to see at first hand examples of weaponry used in both world wars. They also learnt about the deprivations and opportunities of life on the Home Front. Between now and the end of the Spring term, they will be developing this knowledge in History, during form periods and in their English classes, in support of their studies. Despite the long day, students enjoyed the trip (their singing on the return trip  gave a whole new meaning to Carpool Karaoke) and behaved very well,  both in the museum and on the tube.

Isabelle Last was selected to represent Norfolk in the Inter-counties XC competition in Loughborough on Saturday 7th March.

It was a UK wide competition with the best 8 athletes from 40 counties, including Scotland and Wales. This was the biggest and most important race so far in her running career.  Isabelle was one of around 300 girls in the U13 race at the tough and muddy course at Prestwold Hall. She is the youngest in her age group and finished 135th in the UK and 3rd girl home for Norfolk.

On Monday 9th March, thirty of our own Drama students were joined by students from Thomas Mills, Bungay High and Farlingaye for this special event hosted by the nationally renowned Splendid Theatre Company.

The schools were merged and new friendships were forged as they practically explored the characters and themes from Dr Faustus. Splendid practitioners, Nick, Grace and Tanya also gave an insight into their very distinctive style and Brechtian approach to the text. This was especially useful for those studying the text this year and next. The students were later joined by parents and friends as Splendid presented a one hour adaptation of the text in The Silcox Theatre. The trio demonstrated great skill as they not only manipulated the audience to become involved, but were able to effortlessly communicate the 16th century text in the most accessible and humourous way. Hopefully we will see them back at Saint Felix in the not too distant future.

On 4th March, a group of Saint Felix change-makers, on a trip led by Mrs Arias, attended the Wembley SSE Arena for an unparalleled event.

World-renowned speakers, A-list performers and thousands of young people celebrated a year of action that is transforming communities and changing lives.

The event featured youth speakers such as Syrian refugee Maya Ghazal and fashion model Neelam Gill, and musical acts The Fedz, Leona Lewis and Britain’s Got Talent star Calum Scott.

Celebrities including Game Of Thrones stars Alfie Allen, Gwendoline Christie and Bella Ramsey, Jamie Oliver and singer Bluey Robinson, also delivered speeches on topics including healthy eating, climate change and gender equality.

Star speakers, including Idris Elba, Lewis Hamilton, Adwoa Aboah and Laura Whitmore gave motivational speeches and urged young people to be more open about their mental health struggles.

Julia Guillard, 27th Prime Minister of Australia, Sophie and Margaret Trudeau, both wives of Canadian’s former and previous Prime Ministers, addressed the importance of girl’s education and empowerment. We Day founders Craig and Marc Kielburger led the audience in a back-and-forth discussion about climate change and mental health.

Our students had a fantastic day at the event celebrating the charity work of young people. They are already planning to give an assembly with Mrs Arias to share the highlights of the event in order to inspire others and encourage the whole school to start taking on social action and making a difference in the world.

On Monday 27th January, Saint Felix was privileged to host Southwold’s HMD commemoration event for the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz; the Silcox Theatre was packed to overflowing with members of the local community and school pupils.

In his introductory address, the Headmaster gave a resume of the part played by the school in hosting over 200 Kindertransport boys from Germany & Austria during the harsh winter of 1938-39. The school and its staff provided accommodation, support and English lessons while local businesses and individuals from Southwold and Reydon rallied round to give medical services, cinema visits, toys and practical assistance.

This was followed by a presentation from Nigel Spencer MBE who provided more information about the Kindertransport in East Anglia together with black and white newsreel film about conditions and facilities in their holiday camp base in Harwich.

The next 2 speakers (Evelyne Raphael and Larry Lisner) respectively described the experiences of living in Nazi occupied France and of surviving in Auschwitz.
Holocaust Memorial Day does not only commemorate the victims of the Holocaust but also those affected by more recent ethnic cleansing regimes. Dieudonne Gahizi Ganza spoke very movingly about the ‘1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda’ in which over 50 members of his family were murdered.

Following the Kaddish Prayer, the event concluded with Klezmer Music which originated in the Jewish ghettoes of Eastern Europe; this haunting music based on the traditions of the 18th century Ashkenazi Jewish communities provided an appropriate and thought-provoking finale to the presentations.

Splendid Productions present a new creative adaptation of an all-time classic. The brilliant scholar Dr Faustus uses his fabulous intellect to summon the actual devil to grant his every wish! But the devil has a price: it will cost Faustus his soul. Is this the best deal in history – absolutely everything for absolutely nothing? Or… is it perhaps the other way round…?’

Splendid’s devilish cast of three, pack a timeless tale into a thrilling hour of laughter, music, magic and amazement. Morality meets mortality in this ingenious reinvention of an Elizabethan drama that couldn’t be more contemporary.’

Tickets are £5 and are on sale now from Reception for the show on Monday 9th March at 6.00pm. There are only 100 public seats available so these tickets will be on a first come, first served basis.

Francis (centre, with tuba) with the Suffolk Youth Brass Ensemble in St Edmundsbury Cathedral

On Sunday 26th January, Music Scholar Francis Vaughan played the tuba in the Suffolk Youth Brass Ensemble at Choral Evensong to raise awareness for the work of Suffolk Mind.

This was the first public appearance of the Brass Ensemble, which is formed from the Brass Section of the Suffolk Youth Orchestra, the flagship ensemble of Suffolk County Music Service. The High Sheriff of Suffolk, who was in attendance at the service together with the Chairman of Suffolk County Council, was particularly complimentary about the Ensemble’s performance of the haunting piece by Henry Purcell, The Queen’s Dolour, which introduced the sermon by The Right Reverend Graham Knowles on mental health issues in modern life. The Ensemble also joined the Cathedral Choir and Organ in music during and after the service.

After a year in the Suffolk Youth Wind Orchestra, Francis joined the Suffolk Youth Orchestra for the 2019-20 season and is looking forward to a busy programme of concerts at Snape Concert Hall and on tour in the summer. The orchestra’s next engagement is on Tuesday 7th April, when they will accompany the newly formed Suffolk Youth Choir in Carl Orff’s scintillating Carmina Burana. There are still a few places remaining in the Youth Choir and the other county ensembles – please ask a member of the Saint Felix School Music Department for details of how to apply to take part in some really exciting musical experiences at home and abroad.

Southwold U16’s Rugby Club squad have been competing in the Suffolk Plate Competition over the last few months and the final game in the competition was played on Sunday 26th January.

They played some wonderful Rugby and worked hard for each other to win 40-7. As they had won all their previous games this meant they had won the overall Suffolk Plate Competition.

This is a huge achievement for this group, including Saint Felix student, Warren Buist, who have struggled for numbers, and grown from 4 players 5 years ago to a squad of 18 for the first time this season. This group have had to play up for the last 4 years and have only been able to play a few matches in their own age group over the last 2 years with the support of players from the age group below.
