“At the end of GCSEs I was looking for a different kind of environment than the one I was used to at school,” she said. “There are several options around here, but Saint Felix Sixth Form was my first choice.”

When it came to choosing a Sixth Form to attend, she knew Saint Felix would be the right place for her as several members of her family were educated here too.Part of what made Saint Felix stand out to Kerenza was the small class sizes and the close working relationship between the students and the teachers. “You get individual input into what you’re doing, you can tell teachers are passionate about what they do. The sense of freedom to be an individual in a small community really stimulates me creatively and has built my confidence.”

She also feels that it’s a very welcoming place where students develop strong bonds and support each other even though they have different backgrounds. Private schools can have a reputation of being a bit intimidating, but Kerenza soon found that wasn’t the case at Saint Felix. “It’s not as scary as you think for a private school. It’s non-judgemental, there’s no pressure to do what I don’t want to do academically or be who I don’t want to be creatively.”

Kerenza was awarded a scholarship due to her academic potential, and has studied Ancient History, English Literature, Art and Maths. Now she is approaching the end of her A levels she is preparing for her next step. A high achiever, she has a wide choice of establishments to go to, and Saint Felix has supported her all the way from the very start.

Joab Carr began his education at Saint Felix Nursery School then left for a short while to attend Reydon Primary School nearby, before returning to Saint Felix in Year 4.

Joab asserts that by learning in small class sizes that he has benefited from the attention to detail other Sixth Forms wouldn’t have provided. “I have been able to take advantage of the knowledge and teaching that has been on offer and that’s been really important to me. I don’t need someone else to motivate me I just need access to the best education and that’s what I’ve had.”

Joab is studying Economics, Mathematics and Latin and is completing an EPQ as well. Hoping to read Philosophy, Politics and Economics at university, Joab plans to join an NGO or think tank after graduating. “I hope to find a role improving economic welfare eventually as I feel it’s a responsibility to work for the benefit of others.”

Sicilian native Marcus joined Saint Felix at the end of Year 8 when his parents emigrated to Qatar. Three years later, following his GCSEs it was time to choose where he would be taking his A levels. He checked out other schools for Sixth Form, and had offers from several. A supportive environment, care and pastoral support were key factors for him, and having been at the school for years already he knew he could trust these were exactly what Saint Felix offered in abundance.

Sicilian native Marcus joined Saint Felix at the end of Year 8 when his parents emigrated to Qatar. Three years later, following his GCSEs it was time to choose where he would be taking his A levels.

A supportive environment, care and pastoral support were key factors for him, and having been at the school for years already he knew he could trust these were exactly what Saint Felix offered in abundance.

“Saint Felix is good for encouraging diversity. It’s broadened my horizons, and the school encourages respect and tolerance for other cultures, teaching us how to live with other people. Since I’ve been here I’ve made friends from all over the world.”

Marcus is studying maths, biology and chemistry, which he hopes will pave the way for him to do a medical degree. This is a particularly demanding career path and so Saint Felix Sixth Form helps him keep up to date with the A level criteria, as well as giving him pertinent advice on the UCAT. “I have teachers I can rely on and speak to about everything. Tutors spend a lot of time personally with you and guide you really well, making you aware of the sacrifices you sometimes need to make in order to achieve the academic standards required for a medical career.”

He’s very sporty and plays rugby, hockey, tennis and squash, as well as running and swimming to a level where he has qualified for the British National Biathlon. Marcus also regularly helps out in the Nursery, reading stories to the youngest children, which illustrates the strong sense of community and togetherness which exists at Saint Felix. Marcus adds, “at Saint Felix you don’t have to choose between academic and sporting pursuits – you can achieve well in both and that approach lets me fulfil lots of my dreams.”
