Year 9 travelled to the Sainsbury Centre
On Friday 3rd November Year 9 travelled to the Sainsbury Centre of the Visual Arts at the UEA in Norwich.
Students enjoyed a whistle stop tour of the permanent collection before producing some excellent sketches of art work and historic artefacts on display in the gallery space. Joshua Andrew’s sketch of an Egyptian statuette and Eimear Rattenbury’s drawing of a mythical beast are particularly worthy of mention. In the afternoon students took part in an exciting sculpture workshop run by Artist Educator Kate Munro. Members of the group were selected to be models and were asked to adopt a reclining figure pose in the style of the Henry Moore sculptures observed in the gallery. Students worked in teams of three to drape their reclining figures in plaster coated fabric. The resulting plaster casts took on beautiful, undulating, organic forms that were particularly impressive when lit from inside. These, along with student’s drawings, are now on display in the school rotunda. Well done year 9 for recording accurately in the gallery space and embracing the challenge of plaster casting. You were able to identify valuable links between the art work on display and your human figure project work. This experience will undoubtedly help influence your final pieces in the coming weeks.
