Fawcett House is the Sixth Form boys’ boarding house. The house is run by Claire Phelps and she is supported by two assistant house parents Sam Borrer and Ashley Abbott and two house tutors, Katharine Dunn and Mark West.
As a Sixth Form house the boarders are expected to take on more responsibility than younger boarders. This includes supporting staff with the running of the house, helping to run activities, and being leaders and role models for both other boarders and day students.
The students are supported pastorally and academically by their house staff who are all specialist teachers up to A level. Boarder’s therefore benefit from one to one support sessions when applying to University as well as academic support within boarding as well as school.
The boarders are encouraged to take part in extra-curricular activities such as sport and drama both within and outside of school, with staff providing transport assistance. There is a full-time House Matron who takes care of the domestic issues including laundry, ironing and bedding.
Fawcett House has a television room with a wide-screen TV, a home cinema surround sound system and a ‘big screen’ projector for movies and sporting events. There is also a games room, equipped with pool and table tennis tables as well as social areas to play cards and share meals.
The house also has a kitchen, and the sixth form students are encouraged to cook meals together at the weekend and also to cook with staff to learn new recipes and skills before University. The house has two laundries; one for use by the matron and the other for senior boarders to do their own laundry if they wish.
Boarders are in rooms of two and Upper Sixth mostly have their own single study bedrooms. Fawcett House has Wi-Fi throughout the house and cable ports in every bedroom as well as in the communal areas.
We encourage boys to personalise their rooms as they would do at home; with posters, pictures and by using their own bed linen (although we can provide this if preferred). We actively encourage boarders to have friends from school to stay at the weekend, which helps to make their boarding experience feel more like home.
