Last November, twelve Saint Felix international pupils took part in an Inter-school English Second Language Writing Competition organised by Gresham’s School. Along with pupils from Saint Felix and Gresham’s, there were also entries from the Royal Hospital School and King’s Ely. The competition has run for a number of years but this was the first time Saint Felix pupils had entered.

Pupils were asked to write a letter to a friend suggesting ways that he or she could prepare for studying at a UK boarding school.

The entries were marked by an external judge, who is an award-winning journalist. Three Saint Felix pupils won prizes. Congratulations go to Anna Borschel who won 1st prize in the Year 10 – 11 Intermediate category and to Clara Eckardt and Helena Schultheiss who both won 2nd prize in the Year 12 – 13 Advanced category.

The winning pupils returned to Germany at Christmas, but their prizes (Amazon vouchers) will be emailed. Well done to all those who took part and thanks also to Gresham’s for inviting Saint Felix to take part.

We were delighted by the success of our international students. Each year many study English at GCSE and A level alongside their native-speaking UK contemporaries and make rapid progress as a result. This year we had a particularly strong group in the 6th form which was enthusiastic about developing their English skills, and took the first language English IGCSE and wanted to test themselves further in a competition that showcased their flair with language and expression. Their achievements show what can be achieved with initiative and support.

Rod Lynch, Head of English

We had the opportunity not to have english with all the other students but to learn English as a second language so you can learn more grammar. And with time I understood more and more. In addition, the courses are small and the learning atmosphere is really good.
Also in the boarding house every member of staff is really nice and supports you not just in school but also with all other problems you have.
Apart from the fact that I can now speak and understand english much better than before I have gained a lot of experience and learned so much. It was an amazing time that I will never forget.

Anna Borschel (14), Cologne
